A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
