The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
